Grape varieties of Alsace
Complex and powerful
Gewurztraminer is the most aromatic grape variety in Alsace. It is famous for producing rich, seductive and exotic white wines.
Gewurztraminer bunches are compact and contain oval to slightly rounded berries. Wines made from this variety often have a golden to coppery colour, which can vary depending on the ripeness of the grapes and the winemaking methods used. It generally has notes of rose, lychee, apricot, peach, sweet spices such as ginger and white pepper, and hints of tropical fruit.
On the palate, Gewurztraminer is characterised by a rich texture, enhanced by a fine acidity that gives this wine precision and balance.
This variety offers a unique sensory experience, particularly because of its exotic floral and fruity notes, making it a popular choice among white wine lovers.
History and origin
The Gewurztraminer grape is closely associated with the Alsace region. It was introduced to Alsace in the early 16th century, where it was grown for centuries.
It is a mutation of another grape variety called Traminer, an ancient variety that has acquired distinctive aromatic characteristics in Alsace. Its name perfectly reflects its aromatic profile. Gewürz-” is German for “spicy”.
Food & wine pairing
Gewurztraminer’s intense aromatic profile and spiciness make it a perfect match for world cuisine or sweet and savoury dishes such as Asian, Indian or Chinese. In fact, this wine is an ideal choice to accompany chicken curry, butter chicken or prawns in hot sauce.
It also goes well with strong soft or bloomy cheeses such as Munster, Roquefort or Maroilles. The sweetness and aromas of the wine complement the richness of these cheeses.
Gewurztraminer is also a natural partner for fruity, chocolate or creamy desserts.
