DRY AND RACED
Riesling is an emblematic white grape variety grown in the region. It is the noble grape variety par excellence, producing wines renowned for their aromatic purity, liveliness and ability to reflect the Alsatian terroir.
Riesling bunches are medium to small, compact, with pale green to golden berries. The grains are generally small, spherical and of medium density.
Alsace Riesling is famous for its complex, expressive aromas. There are delicate floral notes such as acacia flower and jasmine, as well as aromas of white-fleshed fruit such as apple, pear and apricot. As it ages, Riesling can develop mineral, sometimes stony or petrol-like nuances.
On the palate, Alsace Riesling offers lively, balanced acidity, bringing freshness and vivacity to the wine. White and yellow fruit flavours dominate, with occasional hints of lemon. The wines can range from dry to slightly sweet, although many Alsatian Rieslings are made in a dry style.
STORY & ORIGIN
Riesling is the Rhine grape variety par excellence. Originally from Germany, it is considered to be one of the noblest white grape varieties in the world. It is thought to have been introduced to the region in the 9th century. Its cultivation dates back to the occupation of the Romans, who played an important role in promoting viticulture at that time.
Unlike its German counterpart, Riesling in Alsace was introduced to our region at the end of the 15th century. However, its expansion only began in the second half of the 19th century. It wasn’t until the 1960s that it rose to the top of the list in terms of AOC Alsace production area.
